De Kock Provides Update on Curious Girl
De Kock Racing has furnished a report on the below-par run of Curious Girl in Saturday’s Listed 4Racing Java Stakes over 2400m at TAB Turffontein. The 8-10 favourite faded right out after moving into a challenging position at to the 400m-mark, and wasn’t persisted with.
Mathew de Kock commented: “We had Curious Girl scoped by the on-course veterinarian after the race and the results showed that her airway was full of mucus. These things happen.
“We do our routine checks and balances during the week and she was clean. She unfortunately returned with mucus and it’s like a human having a common cold. They can’t perform, especially over a marathon. It really affected her.
“Curious Girl was fine this morning (Sunday). She has been treated with anti-biotics and she will bounce back. We apologise to her owners, punters and supporters. This is the reality of working with horses, things like this can happen.
“But the main thing is that she will be fine going forward.”
Mat also gave his post-race views on some of the stable’s other runners on Allied Steelrode Onamission Charity Mile Day.
“Flower Island ran an excellent race in the TAB Grade 3 Starling Stakes in her first run after the Spring Challenge, giving the winner 2kg. We were beaten fair and square, congratulations to the winner. Flower Island will head into the Cape Fillies Guineas next.
“Good Day Sunshine also ran a super race in fourth, we’re not sure if she will see out a mile and will look for a suitable contest next. In Hot Water sat back in the field and stayed on, this was a nice pass mark for her and she’ll be going for the Fillies Mile on Betway Summer Cup Day.”
“Fierceness was fantastic in the Graham Beck. His pedigree came through and he will go to the Dingaans next. He will be joined by Fish Tales, who flashed up late for a huge run in fourth, after his rest.
“Gimme A Fireball ran a credible race in fifth after being squeezed for a run on the rail. We will decide where to aim him at, next. King’s Mountain finished only 4.5 lengths off the winner, also a pleasing run from a wide draw. He just got the 1400m, I don’t think an inch further, and we’ll probably keep him to sprints.”
“In the Charity Mile Splittheeighths and Greaterix both finished within a length off the winner and earned stakes. Greaterix is right back to his best and Splittheeights was eye-catching with a big comeback run. He will make a ton of improvement and more than likely will be supplemented into the Summer Cup. I’m A Fireball found the mile just too far.
“Among the others, Corrupt ran a credible fourth, he tried his best, and we were happy with Immediate Edge who showed up nicely before running out of steam after a 14-month layoff. He has a lot of improvement to come. Dog In The Fog was very unlucky, touched off in a photo finish for a huge run out of the Maidens, he can atone soon.”
