One-two-three!

Hawwaam colt Fierceness clocked 56.1s on his way to a smashing debut victory in Race 2 over 1000m at the Vaal on Tuesday, 26 May – and started an excellent day for the stable. Staggerwing (Race 3, 1000m) and Green Machine (Race 4, 2400m) made it three wins in a row for the afternoon.

That Fierceness' time was faster than the time set by MR96 winner Lead The Charge in Race 8 holds plenty of promise. He moved up to dispute the lead with Gavin Lerena on Tiger Magic and jockey Muzi Yeni said: “He wanted to run away from Gavin’s horse, that was just inexperience and he will know more about it next time.”

Fierceness (headline photo) runs for Trevelen Pillay’s TKP Racing and partners, who include Dayalan Chinsammy and the high-riding Murugasa family and Mathew de Kock commented: “It’s always nice when they show on the track what they show at home. He is owned by beautiful people, well done to all.”

The ASSM Racing Syndicate’s Staggerwing (Rafeef) got her first win out of the way with a solid performance – an overdue success following three good places to leading fillies earlier this year. She was the seventh two-year-old winner for De Kock Racing this season – with 11 wins between them and sales bonus cheques for most.

“She got a bit hot under the hood so we gave her a rest. She came back better and stronger and she picked up weight. Thanks to Arun Chadha, Warne and Wendy Rippon for their patience with her.”

Green Machine (Gimmethegreenlight) promised more when he won his Maiden over 2000m recently. He has a good stayers’ pedigree and it showed in the strong way he finished off this 2400m contest against older opposition.

He raced off a reasonable mark of 77, which gave him a chance to follow up on his first win, but he looks progressive enough to hold his own in forthcoming races over the longer distances.

Jockey Gavin Lerena said: “He’s learnt to win now, he’s enjoying his racing and over this type of trip he’ll have a chance.”

Green Machine competes for champion owners Hollywood Racing, who are closing in on 160 wins for the season.
