Charity Mile contenders impress in grass gallop

Two of De Kock Racing’s accomplished older runners are ready for their eagerly awaited comebacks, following extended layoffs.

Four-year-old Splittheeights and five-year-old Immediate Edge, both sons of champion stallion Vercingetorix, are among the entries for the Grade 2 Allied Steelrode Onamission Charity Mile at Turffontein on Saturday, 31 October.

The pair enjoyed an impressive workout together on the grass track at Randjesfontein on Monday, and Mike and Mathew de Kock believe they are strong contenders for their feature return.

“Their gallop was very pleasing and they we re-instated as ready to race by the NHA’s veterinarian as per the new layoff stipulation. They came through the test with flying colours. We filmed the gallop to show the public their well-being,” said Mat.

Splittheeights has won three of six starts, including the 2026 Grade 3 Betway Got The Greenlight Stakes and the Grade 2 Gauteng Guineas. He was a fast-finishing third in the Grade 1 SA Classic. Immediate Edge has won four of seven, among them the 2025 Listed Hawwaam Stakes and the Grade 3 Jubilee Stakes.

“They both have high credentials, with plus signs to their ratings. We look forward to their campaigns this season,” Mat said.

The field for the Charity Mile will be announced on Wednesday during a barrier draw ceremony at which the respective competing charities will also be drawn and allocated to runners.
